A Minor challenge

-

QI have a Morris Minor Traveller that needs an automatic gearbox if I’m to be able to continue driving it. Would a specialist be able to convert it? Francesca Stewart, via email

AIt’s been done, but it’s a bit of a fiddle. Matt Tomkins and Sandy Hamilton of the Morris Minor Owners Club report that the gearbox will have to come from a Marina or Ital. You’ll need the 1275cc engine that goes with it as it won’t fit on a Minor engine.

The gearbox and torque converter are larger than the standard ‘box and bellhousing, so the assembly needs to be shifted forward a bit to clear the steering rack. This means a slimline radiator will need to be sourced and you’ll need to install an electric fan in front of it.

Any Minor specialist should be able to carry out the work required. The biggest challenge will be sourcing the engine and gearbox.
