STARTING PROBLEMS

-

1 Hot starting

Poor hot starting is due either to the float level being too high or a leaking float needle valve. Remove the air cleaner lid after stopping the engine and see if fuel starts to drip into the carb throat.

2 Cold starting

Make sure choke linkage is correctly adjusted. If it stutters and requires revving to clear, make sure the choke flap (where fitted) is free to swing open against its spring pressure. Free off and oil if it isn’t.

3 Fast idle

If the fast idle is too high or low, bend the wire link connecting the choke mechanism to the throttle quadrant. Some have an adjustable screw that bears on the throttle quadrant instead.
