UPGRADE TO THE MAX Ticked off our Top 10? Try these bonus upgrades for size

1. Fit an LPG conversion kit Cost from: £220 Difficulty: 3/5

Have you got gas? Why not? If you’ve got a bonnet long enough to make your polishing arm ache, it may be sheltering an engine with a serious drink problem. A DIY kit for a carburettor engine is cheap at about £130 and tanks cost from around £50 for a doughnut and £40 will buy a fitting kit. It won’t only provide cheaper motoring, it’ll benefit your engine, and it’s as kind to polar bears as a fresh herring and a tickle under the chin.

2. Invest in even more ratios Cost From: £1000 Difficulty: 4/5

Does your classic approach valve-bounce when keeping up with milk floats? If so, an overdrive or five-speed gearbox will not only reduce engine revs but also reduce your fuel bills and prolong your engine’s perkiness. If other models in the range had an overdrive, you could try and find a replacement box, or opt for a remote overdrive: it won’t scare the horses and is a worthwhile upgrade but only if your engine’s up to the challenge.

3. Plumb in a supercharger Cost from: £1200 Difficulty: 3/5

Do you want more oomph? A supercharger producing a gentle breeze is the perfect house-guest, not shouting about its presence or making much noise, or hitting you in the pocket in fuel bills. However, when you press the accelerator, the extra torque will make you giggle. For a big boost of wang, buy a decent kit and make sure your engine’s healthy to start with, fit a thicker head gasket, then enjoy supercharged motoring.
