FRONT BRAKES
Disconnect flexi-hoses
Disconnect the union between the rigid pipe and flexible hose, then remove the clip retaining the hose to the bracket. Our car has front discs. For drum brake advice, skip to the ‘rear brakes’ section later.
Overhaul calipers
Use compressed air to pop the caliper piston(s) out into a thick rag. Examine the pistons and bores for corrosion, especially the groove where the main seal sits. Overhaul or replace accordingly.
Remove calipers
Push back and remove the pads, then remove the caliper retaining bolts. These may have a spring washer or a locking tab that needs to be bent back. Renew these locking devices on reassembly.
Examine pipework
Examine the rigid brake lines. Replace if corroded, chafed or kinked – or if unions or pipe ends are chewed-up. If reusing, blow out the lines from the master cylinder end with a jet of compressed air.
Check discs
Check the disc closely for pitting and scoring. Use a micrometer to check it’s not worn beyond the minimum thickness in your manual and a dial gauge to check for warping. If in doubt, replace as a pair.
Reassemble
Complete assembly with new brake pads and, if needed, a new fitting kit of retaining pins and antirattle springs. Clean the mating faces of the caliper and hub assembly. Refit and secure locking tabs.
