REAR BRAKES

-

Release flexi-hose 1

See the ‘front brakes’ section for rear discs – but note the handbrake arrangement. Start, in any case, by removing the rear flexi-hose and the unions at the rear brakes. Blow rigid pipes clear.

Remove drums 2

Remove the brake drum. It may come off with the wheel bearing (now’s a good time to replace it) or it may be separate from the hub. Remove it with a twisting motion to avoid binding on the shoes.

Examine drums 3

Check the drum for rusting, scoring, ovality or a noticeable wear lip. Replace the pair if in doubt. Drums get contaminated with resinous deposits. Remove with brake cleaner and abrasive paper.

Replace oil seals 4

If the car has a live rear axle, replace the axle oil seals. Old seals go hard and will leak oil into the drums – inevitably just after you’ve fitted new shoes. Small amounts of oil can cause severe brake ‘grab’.

Change shoes and cylinders 5

Always fit new shoes and wheel cylinders. Replace the return springs and mechanical parts if they’re at all ropey. Adjust the brakes – or reset the self-adjusters – as described in your manual.

Refit brake lines 6

Examine the rigid brake lines closely and replace if necessary. They’re particular prone to corrosion at points where they’re in direct contact with the axle casing. Fit a brand new flexible hose.
