WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE
MG’S Midget is always a fun car to drive with lively performance belying its small engine. Ken’s is no exception but the biggest hurdle – especially if you’re tall – is squeezing in under the steering wheel. Once you are seated, everything falls to hand other than the ignition key slot – which is hidden away on the column. By far the best addition to this restoration is that modern Ford gearbox. It may be heresy, but having five allsynchromesh gears – each ratio perfectly spaced – transforms these little cars. Acceleration is great. Even uphill the Midget keeps pace with modern traffic. The brakes are also excellent.
The steering is light, thanks to that standardsized steering wheel, and very precise – in fact the entire car feels tight and new. All things considered, it’s thoroughly enjoyable to drive.
