There’s no shortage of £2000 CLS, but good cars start at £6000. A project CL risks massive bills and avoid anything fire- or crash-damaged. The high cost of some Mercedes’ parts plus the CL’S complexity means some CL’S are too expensive to fix and are scrapped for parts. Pattern or reconditio­ned items can be found which can slash running costs without cutting corners.

For certain jobs you might need the Mercedes Star diagnostic kit to set things up; the CL has several ECUS and components that have to talk to each other. However, you can do more DIY on these cars than you might think; people are frightened to do things because of the CL’S complexity and the crowded engine bay.
