Mechanical layout
The Saab 92 had pioneered a transverse engine mounted alongside a separate front transaxle – the formula that has become today’s norm. The 93’s engine, however, was mounted longitudinally ahead of the transaxle. The radiator was high up and behind it, as it had been on the 92, with a blind controlled by an incabin pull cord for quick warm-up and toasty heating. Cooling was no longer thermosyphon, but with a water pump, thermostat and fan.
