FINISH AT THE TANK

-

1 Change tank hoses

Replace the hose(s) to the tank. You may need to drop the tank or remove interior trim to get at these. They’re often the car’s originals. Don’t try to replace them using keyhole surgery.

2 Check pickup

The pickup pipe inside the fuel tank should have a gauze filter over its end. If the pipe can be removed from the tank, do so and fit a new gasket on reassembly. If the pipe’s fixed, a removable gauze may be placed directly above the tank’s drain plug. Clean and inspect the gauze. If it’s clogged with varnish like the one above, it’s doomed and needs to be replaced. At a pinch, a ruined gauze can be replaced with an in-line filter placed just after the tank pickup.
