WHAT WE SAY TEAM PC’S VIEW

James likes… EVERYTHING I’ve been lucky enough to have two company E46s on my drive – a 330Ci and a 330D. Both were fast, handsome, beautifully-made and very enjoyable to drive. I was a bit miffed I didn’t get the Alfa 166 I requested, but the E46 was so unbelievably good at everything, it was impossible not to concede that it isn’t just one of the best BMWS – it’s one of the best saloon cars ever made.

Matt G likes… THE ROOMY

ONE I currently own a 2002 E46 318i Touring and it has been a superb addition to my fleet over the past six months or so. Spin dryer, fridge/freezer, sideboard and heck, even my TR6’S rebuilt engine – all of the above and more has been in the boot-cum-load bay at some point. She’s great to drive and reasonable on fuel, too, so it’s an E46 thumbs-up from me.

Matt T likes… THE HANDSON ONE

Having been involved in the resurrection of a 318i with a snapped timing chain guide, I can confirm that, although there is ample room to work on the engine with the plastic trims out of the way and front subframe neatly hinged down (to access the sump) it’s a complex beast. A good one is great, but delve inside and there’s a world of pain to explore. Danny likes… THE PRICE It’s fast, competent, sleek, engaging to drive and fantastically cheap. So, why don’t I want one? I suppose it’s a bit new for me. I would happilly jump into an E36, but the E46 has to mature to become a car of interest. Plus, and this is an odd reason to NOT want a car, it is too competent. It feels sterile; too efficient. Nothing will go wrong. What’s the point in that?
