Matt Tomkins on why this advert still rings true today…

Why you’ll need deep pockets to keep up with a Triumph Stag…

As editor Danny professes (see p64), the Stag is a real practical classic. Open-air motoring for all the family, a soundtrack to die for and great road manners. As a grand tourer it’s superb, you’ll be cruising in modern traffic with ease, plus there’s oodles of club and parts support.

And yet, it’s still possible to get an on-the-road example for six grand – and the best for not much more than double that! The advert above told buyers in 1974 that they’d need deep pockets to be able to keep up with a Stag… the same is true in 2020. Yes, you could go out and get yourself a Merc SL or a Jensen interceptor convertible for the four-up V8 drop-top experience, but purchase price aside, Stag maintenance costs will be pocket money in comparison.
