ESSENTIAL CHECKS

-

1

Once an Exige has been heavily crashed, it is fit for scrap only, as replacement bodyshells aren’t available and badly damaged ones can’t be repaired. Crashed Exiges aren’t unusual and checking for damage isn’t easy, as much of the structure is hidden by the bodywork and undertrays.

2

Electrolytic corrosion around the front

suspension pick up points is also common. If things are really bad, it can easily cost £1000 to fix.

3

The Exige S1 came with a K-series engine featuring variable valve timing. It’s a stressed unit, so it can wear out within 50,000 miles – but if looked after it will last twice this and more. Check for blue smoke from the exhaust under acceleration that betrays worn piston rings and cylinder bores. 4 A well-maintained S1 won’t overheat, but it will if the coolant level has been allowed to drop, thanks to the minimal coolant capacity. Radiators are fragile so look for coolant at the base, but access is poor as it’s buried in the nose.

5

Steering racks wear out within 35,000 miles, so check for play. Replacement costs £750 all-in. Front suspension balljoints wear out after 35,000 miles, while dampers typically last just half this. Budget £100 per corner for replacements, and another £25 for each of the balljoints.

6

The MMC (Metal Matrix Composite) brake discs of the S1 last well, but the special pads are costly and scarce, so many cars now have steel discs that can wear and rust. Replacement steel discs cost £120 per pair, or £190 for grooved alternatives.
