Why the BMW E39 is worthy of your attention
When thinking of which Munich model upon which to place your hard earned, you can be forgiven for concentrating on one of the usual M-badged junior saloons. They’re fast, fun and embody the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ mantra. They’re also, well, a bit too obvious.
The market already knows small, sporty BMWS will appreciate; it’s less convinced by Munich’s larger offerings. There’s one sure bet in this category, however and its bound for glory… the fourth-generation of
BMW’S mid-size 5 Series, known as the E39. For many a Bavarian buff, it’s the best 5 of them all. Huge investment during its development combined with clever engineering and plenty of aluminium to really give Mercedes-benz a wake-up call. The M5 leads the investment charge, of course, but don’t overlook its V8 siblings the 535i and 540i. True BMW fanatics are already hoarding Sport models with their body kits and lower, stiffer suspension. The 530i with its rack-and-pinion steering and superb six-cylinder war cry is something of a hidden gem.
