Work done

Alternator repaired; clutch plates replaced. When I set out to find a classic Triumph bike some ten years ago, I had no idea the search would end with a 1970 Tiger 650 TR6 R, meaning that I have two TR6S of identical vintage, but they’ve only six wheels between them!

The bike had been running well until about two years ago, when its charging system failed. Since then, it’s languished sadly in the shed while I was busy with my four-wheeled classics. Finally, lockdown meant there was time for the Tiger. The old petrol in the tank smelt like varnish and charging the battery for 24 hours achieved nothing. Kicking the engine over, it was obvious the clutch had stuck. A quick fix was out of the question: it needed a proper recommission.

Removing the primary chain cover, I was confronted by a mess of melted alternator and a completely seized clutch. After fitting a replacement alternator stator coupled to a modern regulator, new battery and new clutch plates, plus a lube service and a thorough clean of the fuel system, it was ready to go again.

With a gallon of fresh 99 octane in the tank, I tickled the carb and kicked her over.

Second attempt and she burst into life. The test ride that followed was glorious… my Tiger was back in rude good health, like she’d never been away!
