USING A SERVICE TOOL

-

1 Remove old bush

For bushes where the pivot shaft can be withdrawn, use the two cup-like mandrels to bear on the bush and wishbone while winding out the threaded bolt. Take time and care so as not to overstress the tool.

2 Fit new bush

Reassembly is the reverse of removal, although in this case the tool had to be reconfigured slightly.

You might be able to knock or press the bush in easily once the wishbone socket’s cleaned and greased.

3 Forged pivots

To replace bushes in situ on forged pivots, remove nuts and washers from both ends of the pivot shaft. Fit the receiver cup onto the tool spindle. Wind the internal thread of the spindle onto the pivot shaft.

4 Extraction

You’ll have to wind the cup some way to overcome the elasticity of the rubber. Use moderate heat and blows to the wishbone to start it moving once under tension. Finally, ‘pop’ the bush out with a spanner.

5 Fit new bush

Replace this bush before doing the other side. A special distance piece (shown) is placed between the wishbone and the pivot-to-chassis bolt. Use the correct-sized mandrel to wind the bush into position.

6 General note

It’s essential to only fully-tighten the bushes with the car on its wheels. If access is awkward, carefully lower the car onto a suitable sized support under the front hub or control arm so that the body sits level.
