Work done

Bought back after MOT failure; repair plans afoot. Have you ever suffered sellers remorse? Me too. And my best mate, Tom. When I first started at PC, I needed a car that wasn’t a Morris Minor to tackle the commute from home in Aylesbury to Peterborough when I wasn’t relying on the kindness of James Walshe or Sam Skelton for a bed for the night.

Tom offered to sell me his Eunos MKI, a car I had long admired. It served me well for two years, as it had done Tom before me, and wanted for very little beyond a clutch and an alternator. But, in 2017 I put it up for sale to fund the purchase of my now-beloved MGB GT. The new owner was Chris Hayden, a close friend of PC’S production editor, Matt George. Chris ran the car for three years until MOT failure in September 2020.

By then, the car needed a large amount of welding alongside mechanical work to make it roadworthy once more. Chris told Matt of the MOT result, and he passed the news on to me. ‘If he decides to sell it,’ I told Matt, ‘please tell him I’d like first refusal.’

After much thought, Chris did want to sell, so at the beginning of December 2020, I sent Clive Jefferson to bring the car back ‘home’.

Now 50/50 owners, Tom and I plan to restore the car to its former glory and, this time, not let it go! Jumping behind the wheel to drive it off the trailer was like putting on an old coat. It’s amazing how much it gets under your skin.
