British Rail’s Intercity 125 – also known as the High Speed Train – secured its status as the world’s fastest diesel-powered train by achieving 148mph on a three-coach train (testing new passenger carriage bogies) between York and Northallerton in November. 125mph was the usual maximum operating speed for HSTS, with the two power cars developing 2250hp each.
AT THE FLICKS
The Star Wars franchise was comprehensively spoofed by Mel Brooks in Spaceballs. Although it met with a mixed reaction at the time, it’s since become a cult classic. George Lucas, the creator of Star
Wars, apparently loved it, telling Brooks that he ‘was afraid he would bust something from laughing.’
