The Citroën Specials Club

A new club that’s more than 30 years-old!

-

Although the Citroën Specials Club may be a new name to many, the club’s history can be traced back to 1989 when it was created by bringing together several groups and registers. Many owners used one of the available kits, others taking a rather more DIY route using purchased plans, and the even more adventurous creating customdesigned scratch-built vehicles.

The common factor was the use of the Citroën 2CV engine and chassis; its running gear and air-cooled engine providing a cheap, easy to work on platform that was often modified to create a cyclecarlike three-wheeled vehicle.

The most commonly seen of these cars is the Lomax in either three or four-wheel versions; despite starting from a glassfibre body kit, during the build process each was customised, making every one unique. Like all true enthusiasts, owners never really complete their build, and the straightforward construction methods encourage modifications and other enhancements long after the vehicle is road legal. Despite its roots in Citroën-based marques such as Blackjack Avion, Burton, Manx, Pembleton and Lomax, all vehicles and one-off ‘homebuilt vehicles that follow the lightweight specials ethos are welcome.

Members can benefit from a wealth of knowledge with the club providing a countrywide support network. Members also receive Flat Out, a bi-monthly club magazine, while the club’s regional organisation provides plenty of local and national events, and often club visits to mainland Europe, to meet up and enjoy the cars.

If this all sounds good to you, then you can meet the club and its members at the forthcoming Newark Kit Car Festival on July 23-24.
