WHAT WE SAY THE ONE TO BUY

James likes the… BOOTED ONE

I’ll have a Belmont, please. This little slice of Eighties culture was a huge hit with elderly folk, so it’s likely survivors will be in rather fine order. Look hard enough and you might even bag yourself a late Belmont SRI, with trademark red bumper inserts, sports seats and a 0-60mph time of 9.1 seconds. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Q-car status absolutely guaranteed.

Matt G likes the… SPEEDY ONE

My choice would have to be the sporty GTE. The brawny engine, space age styling and sweet chassis make it a delight to drive – it’s a hot hatch that deserves to be better known compared to its rivals from Peugeot and VW. If Vauxhall could bring back the GTE badge on a car imbued with as much character and charm as this one, it’d be onto an extremely good thing.

Matt T likes the… BASIC ONE

There’s something utterly charming about a base-spec Astra. It’s the car of so many family holidays and the epitome of unexceptional coolness. A time capsule to a bygone era, a basic Astra will likely turn more heads on a rally field than a GTE, or perhaps even more exotic sporting classics.

It’s relatable, it’s nostalgia on four wheels, it’s cool.

Danny likes the… COMMERCIAL

I’d go for a base model Astramax Van, just like the one I drove on my first delivery job when I was a young university student. It was the most fun I had ever had behind the wheel. Light, fast and not mine… plus these days, it will be the only one at a show. Astras are fab to drive… vans included. If I couldnt find one, I’d go for a GTE. Not as pure as the MKI, but so usable.
