Steph Hoy appreciates her auntie Ash’s practical ,otoring: Honda CR-V
Unlike me and my appreciation for clapped out classics, my auntie Ash is far more sensible with her car buying decisions. Her first car was picked by my grandad, who felt the Volvo 340 offered everything a go-getting young woman in her twenties needed. Before long, the car was replaced with a trendier Renault Clio finished in metallic purple; perfectly sized for on-street city parking.
A Jeep Cherokee followed, which stayed with her until she emigrated to Margaret River in Australia in the early Noughties. Knowing the terrain would be far more challenging and journeys far longer, Ash decided her car of choice for life down under would be the Honda CR-V. Buying the CR-V was a real leap of faith… there was no test drive and, as she disembarked the plane to begin her new life, she was whisked to the forecourt and handed the keys to her new silver Honda CR-V.
With the nearest city being 250 miles north, Rhonda the Honda quickly earned her place as the trusty family steed. We all have fond memories of her; she was one of my cousin’s learner driver cars and my first modern car driving experience! I couldn’t believe how light and responsive the steering was, how bright the headlights were or how comfy and quiet the car was. If there was one modern car that could’ve tempted me away from classics, it was Rhonda.
Sadly, all good things come to an end and Rhonda was written off in a car accident with a kangaroo; a sad ending for a car that was so reliable it only ever needed a new battery and a set of tyres. While Rhonda is gone, the love affair lives on and my auntie has invested in another CR-V and considers it her ‘car for life’!
