WHAT WE SAY THE ONE TO BUY
James likes the… YELLOW ONE
So excited was I about the Coupé after it was launched, I went to my then local Fiat dealer in Sheffield to ask what it would take for me to be able to afford a monthly payment on one. I was dreaming. Even the base model was out of reach, although I was soon distracted by a bright yellow Cinquecento Sporting instead. Fiat was absolutely on fire in the mid-nineties.

1998 saw the release of the LE, with a number of cool detail differences over the standard 20v Turbo. Inside, you got Recaro seats with red leather inserts and Sparco pedals, while the body-coloured dash was replaced with a titanium grey one. But, most excitingly, you also got a push-button starter. I can imagine myself pressing it and saying: ‘Fiat… start!’
Matt T likes the… NA FIVE-POT
For me it’s the way this thing looks and handles that appeals, so I’ll save my dosh and pass on a turbo, but it’s still got to be a 1998cc fivebanger as fitted from ’96 for me. There’s something captivating about that offbeat burble.
I’d be happy with something a bit scruffy around the edges too, especially if I could get it for the right price.
Danny likes the… 20V NON-TURBO
The engine is less stressed, but you still get all the noise, plenty of quick and lots of nimble. You also have a usable daily driver that will out ‘look’ anything in the car park and one that will make you feel like a Don wherever you go. I would go for the post-2000 end of the line 20v with all the trimmings – leather air-con and one of the final factory colour schemes.
