Scientific name: Chrysiptera parasema Pronunciation: Chris-ip-tera pa-ra-see-ma Origin: Western Pacific from Australia to the Philippines Maximum size: Around 7cm Tank size: Minimum 120x30x30cm Availability and cost: Very common; starting around £9 each

A common species, this fish is a deeper hue of blue than other ‘yellow tail’ types. It’s also a lot less aggressive than many fish that look like it, but that’s not to say it’s without territories or disputes. Keepers note how quickly this fish settles, even feeding right after introduction in some cases. Traditionally, the hardiness of this species means it has been used to mature new tanks, but such practices are now consigned to the list of things we aquarists no longer do.
