Practical Fishkeeping

Three benefits of a biotope

-

HAPPY FISH: you can’t really improve on nature. Give a fish the exact environment it has evolved to over several millennia, and it’ll know where it stands.

BRIGHTER FISH COLOURS: fish that aren’t stressed are more likely to show off, and fish in their ideal water parameters are brighter still. A biotope, by definition, requires water parameters to be exact for the fish you’re keeping.

AUTHENTIC BEHAVIOUR: surrounded with the right environmental ‘cues’, a fish may be triggered into feeding, spawning or displaying in ways they never would in the community tank.
