Gabor’s shrimp buying advice

-

1

Always buy from reputable sellers, preferably from those breeding their shrimp in the UK. You can find offspring from Dat’s shrimp at shrimpcorner.co.uk.

2

Always ask the seller for pictures of the actual shrimp you are buying to avoid disputes. The shrimp you buy should always have solid and strong colours, typical of the variety. Don’t be fooled by someone saying that their green Caridina shrimp is a new and expensive form. It’s likely only a very low-grade black shrimp with a weak black gene. It may arrive green but can turn pale black later in your tank.

3

Before complaining about the quality of the shrimp you received wait for a couple of days.

During transit shrimp lose colour and even the highest-grade ones look tatty straight out of the box. Often, they will only regain their full glory after their next moult.

4

Buy young shrimp. Adults can have difficulties adjusting to a new environment and may stop breeding. On top of that adults will have a shorter lifespan, too.

5

Don’t forget that you are dealing with live creatures, they don’t work like machines churning out regular amounts off high quality offspring. Although it could be tempting to invest your life savings into it, you should consider shrimp breeding as a hobby only. I’ve yet to see anyone making a fortune on them.
