Sleeper gobies
Sleeper gobies tend to be larger than regular gobies, at least as far as the ones in the aquarium trade go, The Empire gudgeon, Hypseleotris compressa, is a truly beautiful fish, males sporting red, black, and white colouration. Adults supposedly get to around 10-12cm long in the wild, and like a lot of sleepers, the eggs may hatch in freshwater streams but the fry drift downstream to the sea where they develop in the plankton. They ideally need a tank of 100 l in volume and, like a lot of sleepers, their territoriality and predatory nature makes them difficult to keep in community tanks. Nonetheless, Empire gudgeons and things like the Crazyfish, Butis butis, are fine examples of sleepers that do well in low-end brackish water systems.
