What can I keep with my puffer?

- JACQUI GRAY, VIA EMAIL

I have a 400 l saltwater tank containing a 10cm Dog-faced puffer called Steve. He has a fab personality and always comes to say “hello”. But I wondered about a fish I can keep with him. What would you suggest please?

JEREMY SAYS: Tankmates could range from damselfish and larger clownfish species like Tomato clowns, to Racoon butterflyfish, and larger wrasses like Thalassoma species. Or if you want a tank with ‘bite’, you could add a lionfish, Snowflake moray eel and a Harlequin tuskfish. Just be careful at feeding time, as large puffers lunge for food and I’ve seen accidental injuries caused to other fish that dashed in too quickly and got in the way. To combat this, broadcast smaller food items over the surface of the tank first, before adding large cockles and mussels for the puffer.
