The closely related Vietnamese cardinal minnow, Tanichthys micagemmae, is a similar fish to the White Cloud, but is smaller at 2-3cm and has a wider, more prominent, blue band, which is positioned slightly further down on the flank, while the underside is paler in colour. There’s also another, less commonly traded White Cloud form called Tanichthys albonubes var. ‘lini’, which is well worth keeping an eye out for – it’s very striking, with more flowing, flame-coloured finnage edged in red. Both have similar requirements for sub-tropical temperatures and should be kept in groups of at least six.
