#8 Control the light

Photographer George Knox (http://cli.re/LPM1yM) had a clear idea in mind for his shoot – and a masterful control of lighting to help him achieve it.

“I had decided some time ago to create a Disney-style ice queen image. It was important to choose a model with the cheekbones to match the idea! I’m blessed with a very large studio, with ceilings at least 40ft in height. My adjustable rig has a range of lights on it, one of which is a small white 500W theatre spot, which I can place anywhere between the ceiling and floor. I positioned it above and to my left. The angled head gave me the drama of her cheeks and just enough of her eyes. I decided to soften it by using an ivory umbrella over the lens of the light. The brightness of the light and the f/11 exposure ensured that the background was completely black. Finally, I reduced the saturation in post-editing to give it the feel you see here.”
