TAKING INSPIRATION FROM A QUOTE BY American polymath William Arthur Ward – “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it” – Marina de Wit (marinadewit.smugmug.com) produces something rather magical in her images of flowers that take on a unique, painterly beauty.

“I’m a self-taught fine art floral photographer, inspired by the work of Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, and a dreamer at heart. I use natural light to create floral images that tell a tale of romance and nostalgia. My camera is my ‘brush’ and my ‘paint’ is Photoshop where the use of Curves, Levels and Gradients helps create the dark moody floral images.

I love rich colours and textures and take great care to capture the essence of my subjects, especially those little intricacies that are so easily overlooked. Most of my images are captured in and around Auckland, New Zealand, at the Wintergardens. I dedicate my work to my grandmother, and my floral images are named after the many women, past and present, who continue to inspire me.

“Self-taught artists face various difficulties along the way and I am grateful to all who have encouraged me to believe in myself, to push a little harder, to learn something new, to go out and meet people, to stand for myself and be proud of my goals, to help others, to be kinder, to give back, to share, to create, to serve, and in turn to inspire others.”
