Capirossi loves a resto

Former Motogp star goes all PS on his ’80s Gilera

ALL RACERS have to start somewhere – and for the likes of Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi and Loris Capirossi, that somewhere was the Italian 125 Production Championship. Capirossi, who raced in the series in the late ’80s, posted a picture of this Gilera KZ125 on Facebook recently, so we asked Italian friend Jacopo Barone – organiser of our Italian racing adventure on page 30 – if he knew anything about it.

One of Jacopo’s mates knows Capirossi well, and it turns out that the bike has an interesting story. After Capirossi raced in the Italian 125 season in 1988 on the KZ, where he finished fourth overall, the bike ended up at a scrapyard – but having kept hold of a few bits and pieces, Loris ended up building an originalspec version of the bike with the help of his brother, who is a bit of a mechanical genius and looks after Loris’s car and bike collection. He’s now turned his attention to restoring the Honda NS125R Super Sport he raced in 1987 – we’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
