Matthew Robertson & Martin Sandison
“MY MATE Martin and I had never been on a trackday, so we thought the one at Cadwell Park would be a good place to start. Obviously it’s a bit of a trek from the Shetlands but we didn’t let that stop us, so we got a 14-hour ferry down to Aberdeen and then rode nearly 500 miles down to Cadwell. We left on Tuesday night and got to Cadwell on Friday, and it was all pretty smooth apart from the part where my Ducati’s battery decided to develop a few issues.
“I’d been looking for a Ducati 851 for 12 years, but they’re hard to get because they don’t hang about when they come up for sale. I saw this one at a garage in Leicestershire – I phoned up the guy as soon as I saw it and he said, ‘You don’t mess around – I only posted the ad 10 minutes ago.’ I bought it over the phone there and then. Matthew’s KR-1S was a different kettle of fish – he got it as a £300 box of bits nine years ago and restored it to a really high spec. He paints cars for a living so he has a real eye for detail.
“The trackday was fantastic, although after the first session on the Sunday we saw someone throw a CBR400 down the track – we came back into the pits and said, ‘We need to calm down a bit – we’ve still got to get home on these things.’
“When we finally made it back to the Shetlands I was sitting at work thinking, ‘I can’t believe we’ve just travelled 28 hours on water and 1000 miles on roads to get to a trackday.’ See you again next year...”
