Two years ago I was after a new bike and this one came up in Germany – I went to see it and pretty soon I was driving home with a 1999 Kawasaki

ZRX1200R in my van. It’s got a different front-end from a company in Germany called Kawa motor Edition, who also made the bespoke swingarm and exhaust that sweeps up through the seat unit. It fits perfectly, although if you want to do any work to the rear-end it’s a nightmare – I changed the battery and basically had to take the entire back of the bike apart.

It’s amazing to ride; the suspension is hard but it’s awesome in corners. If anything it accelerates too quickly – I might have to alter the chain. Even so, what a bike. Japanese engineering with some help from the Germans – that’s a good combination in my book.

From swingarm to bodywork, there’s not a lot that’s still standard here
