Contrary to regulation

Practical Sportsbikes (UK) - - Fettling -

I’ve had a 1997 Honda Fireblade since new, but I have a problem with the bike not charging. I replaced the battery, alternator and rectifier, but the problem remains.

I checked the voltage across the battery: at idle it’s 13.5V and at 5000rpm it’s 18.1V. With the lights on at idle it show 12.1V and at 5000rpm it’s 12.3V. Is the rectifier at fault or should I be looking more closely at the lighting circuit?

Ferret says: The regulator is failing to do its job when the lights are off and this is probably down to bad connections and/or a poor earth. You’re into ECU frying territory here. The system’s behaviour with the lights on is odd but again I’m suspecting the issues to be interrelated. Sort earths, alternator, reg/ rec and battery connections and see what you get.
