Honda VTR1000 SP-1 2000-2001
996cc, 8v, dohc, 90-degree V-twin Smaller, lighter and slimmer than the TL-R, Honda’s (HRC’S) attempt at beating Ducati won WSB first time out. The 2002 SP-2 had a host of changes (bigger throttle bodies, new injectors, swingarm, ECU, forks, wheels and more). A steal compared to an RC30.
Value now: £4950-£6750
Ducati 996 Biposto 1999-2001
996cc, 8v, desmodromic, 90-degree V-twin
A small and stubby sports star overshadowed by its higher spec S and R versions and by both the original 916 and the last-of-the-line 998 (which came out in 2002). Best value variant of Ducati’s definitive superbike.
Value now: £4950-£6500 (more for S &R versions)
Aprilia RSV1000 Mille 1998-2003
998cc, 8v, dohc 60-degree V-twin 128bhp from its compact Rotax twin in a beautifully crafted chassis. Looks slightly oddball and never ‘quite’ won on track. A used bargain.
Value now: £2400-£4000
