Life-long Kawasaki fancier Dave started Z-power way back in 1986, and it’s been supplying owners of ’70s and ’80s Kwaks with parts, knowledge and inspiration ever since

“I’m semi-retired now, but Z-power is still very much in business – now run by Phil Alford who’s been here since 1997 and Trevor Greenfield who’s been a partner in the business for over 10 years. I’m still involved, mainly in sourcing new parts.

“We still sell around 15 sets of Z1 exhausts a month, mainly to UK customers; I didn’t think there were that many Zeds still out there, even accounting for all the US imports. The demand for 1970s stuff is massive, and we’re having more and more stuff made for it: tanks, pipes, electrics, plastics, you name it. We have it made by EMGO.

“A long-time customer of ours went to work for EMGO and he took his Z1B with him. They mainly made Harley stuff at the time, so he asked them to make a few bits for his Kawasaki. He got them to make a new kickstart, but the one he gave them was bent – so all the replicas were too.

“The quality of the remade stuff is really good though. Ironically, it’s too good for some restorers who want the slightly rough finish of the originals but I know which I’d rather have.

“We get interest in parts for both air-cooled and liquid-cooled Gpzs as well. There will come a time when we get more parts made for them too as the demand increases. For us, business is booming. There’s enough interest in Kawasaki for us to stay loyal to the bikes we really love. I might even get some time now to build a few more…” Z-power: 01942 262864
