Lost the thread

Practical Sportsbikes (UK) - - On the Bench -

Q: I removed the fork bottoms from my Kawasaki ZX-7R’S front end to have the stanchions rechromed.

However both fork bottoms have lost around three to 4mm of thread. The stanchions have 15mm of thread. Are the bottoms still OK to be refitted?

Also, what is the best way to finish the bottoms because of the heat damage to the paint.

A: Darren Wnukoski says: You won’t find any suspension specialist who would risk saying that these are OK to be re-used. Some of the leverage on the tube has been lost, so it is more likely to work loose. All that said, I’ve seen worse than these re-used. Plus, even with some thread gone, they still have more support than most modern designs. You need to take your own view – and I’m afraid you’re on your own with that. If you do re-use, don’t forget the thread lock. For the refinishing, I’d go for Cerakote as it’s tough, or good old paint. Powdercoat has come on a lot in recent years but this is one application where I feel it’s still a little too thick.
