WHAT TO LOOK FOR
First work out what you’ve got; UK 4DX or Japanese -spec 3TJ? Or is it an SP version? Differences include mph speedo, indicators, mirrors and tail lights; SPS have fully adjustable suspension, c/r ’boxes and wilder cam timing.
As with all EXUPS, the valve can seize, and it makes a big difference on the small motor. Maintenance is essential, and new bushes are no longer available so repair is expensive. Exhaust headers and collector box are prone to rot too.
Seized calipers (bare aluminium, not anodised) need regular cleaning to avoid seized pistons and warped discs (an old Yamaha weakness). This bike has EBC replacement discs fitted – a very worthwhile mod. .
