Brakes on all GSX-400S, from the GK71 to the last GK76, seem to be poor, and they de­te­ri­o­rate ex­po­nen­tially with age un­til they’re bloody ter­ri­ble. Strip and re­fur­bish the calipers, re­place hoses, try pat­tern discs with qual­ity pads.

Cos­met­ics: GSX-RS, of all sizes, tend to be treated with less care; maybe it’s be­cause their own­ers like them so much they ride them more. Ei­ther way, scruffy GSX-R400S abound. Bring­ing them back isn’t too chal­leng­ing: a few parts are com­mon to other Suzukis, and al­most ev­ery­thing is still avail­able if you look hard enough.
