1990 Yamaha Fzr/blade Turbo
Owner: Dave Kay, Devon Owned for: build started last year
What’s the story? Had the FZR400 frame kicking about, so decided to stick a ’98 CBR919 Fireblade motor in it. It’s a tight fit! I initially ran the bike on carbs, rode it for 30 miles then realised it needed a turbo.
Progress so far? Daniel Leander in Sweden talked me through what needed doing via email. I got a Saab TD04HL turbo, made my own stainless manifold, pipe and plenum chamber. I adapted a BMW S1000RR swingarm to fit – 100mm longer than standard to help keep the front down! I’ve uprated the motor with studs rather than bolts for the head, a steel spacer to lower compression, a slightly longer cam chain and altered cam timing.
What’s next? I started the conversion doing odd bits at weekends so progress is slow. Even though everything is tight with the FZR frame and CBR motor I’ve still managed to keep the original fairing. I reckon 200bhp when it’s done. It should be, er... exciting.
A monster made from and ends odds kicking about
One of the more outrageous projects on the go at the moment
Handmade plenum chamber, and many more bits besides
