The powerplants that shook the world examined and unashamedly celebrated

Every generation has its own golden era of motorcycle development. But by any standard the period from the early 1970s to the new millennium was one of incredible evolution of a rapidity to echo the capabilities of each innovative engine.

We all have our favourites, and compiling this Top 10 list of the greatest engines of the decades covered by Practical Sportsbikes saw us having arguments with ourselves, let alone with each other. So we set personal prejudices to one side to be as objective as we could, fully aware that if asked to come up with this list at another time it might look slightly different. However after some reflection we conclude that it wouldn’t be different by much.

We present this list to you on the basis that each and every one of the engines we selected was an influential landmark that brought something to the canon of brilliant motorcycles as well as being worthy of celebration for their individual achievements. We also know that you’ll be sure to inform us where you disagree and why.
