BIKES OF MY LIFE
Steve Panter, and his left field selection. How about an XS250 with a 400 top end?
Steve Panter will be a familiar face to many PS readers. Several of you will be customers of the firm owned by the 38 yearold, Allen’s Performance which specialises in Keihin and Mikuni carbs and spares and other performance parts.
As a kid Steve lived many miles from school. Reaching the senior years of his education, he realised that the travails of the lengthy cycle ride to sixth form would be mitigated by some form of automotive assistance. He wanted a bike but his father offered to pay for driving lessons if young Steve stayed away from two wheels – and he would be 21before he got a bike. “I did Direct Access on a Suzuki GS500 then bought a Kawasaki ZXR400; it was a bit of a project,” says Steve.
For the moment most of Steve’s riding is done on track; actual racing rather than trackdays and all on a variety of productionbased Ps-era bikes. You can be sure that they all fuel really rather well. “I do have one road bike at the moment that’s taxed and tested – a Honda PC50. I keep meaning to return my Aprilia RSV Mille to the road too,” says Steve. For the moment he’s a busy boy competing in Classic Endurance, the PS Production series and various post-classic and Superstock events.
