1982 Suzuki GSX750 Katana
Owner: Mark Hynes, Heysham, Lancs Owned for: six months
What’s the story?
Wanted a Katana, but prices for 1000s and 1100s were too high so I ended up buying this Japanesespec 750 with a 16-inch front wheel that I ended up getting for £1600. When I was stripping it down I was thinking ‘this is so easy to work on compared to modern bikes’.
Progress so far?
Like most things, it looked a lot better in pics than it did when I finally saw it in the metal. It was dirty, corroded and in need of a complete ground-up rebuild. Once it was all in bits I made up the frame bracing – Geoff at Asbo welded them in place for me, and I’ve replaced the small wheels with 17-inch GSX-R ones. Front end is GSX-R1100K; I made new lockstops on my lathe. I’ve just serviced the motor; it runs as sweet as a nut and is only showing 17,000 miles from new.
Just down to painting the bodywork now, the old Kat should be ready to rock by spring. I’ll be doing the paint myself in the garage. Eventually it may get an 1100 engine, but it’s all down to one coming along at the right price – they’re not cheap because they’re so popular with the drag racing boys. Oh, and I’ve just bought an RZ250 as my next project.
Alex has been going steadily at this – and winning
All it really wants is an 1100cc engine
But was soon brought back to better health
Kat was far mangier in the metal than in pics
