So what type of pet provides the best health benefits? Much of the research has focused on dogs, so it could be argued they offer the greatest health advantages. But, says Dr Wells, there’s evidence that all pets can contribute to both our physical and mental wellbeing. ‘Pets should certainly not be regarded as a perfect pill for treating ill health. But they have the potential to contribute significan­tly to our wellbeing and quality of life.’

Cat agrees. ‘It’s vital to remember that owning an animal is a major commitment and requires a lot of serious thought and planning. Getting a pet is unlikely to be the sole solution for getting and staying healthy, but one of the many positive consequenc­es of having one is the health benefits it can potentiall­y bring.’
