MATERIALS

15(16:17:17:18:18:19) 50g balls of Debbie Bliss Cotton DK in White 01.

Pair each of 3.25mm and 4mm knitting needles.

TENSION

18 sts and 27 rows to 10cm square over patt, using 4mm needles.

ABBREVIATI­ONS beg beginning; cm centimetre­s; cont continue; dec decrease; foll following; inc increase; k knit; kfb k into front and back of next st; p purl; patt pattern; psso pass slipped st over; rem remaining; rep repeat; sl slip; ssk [slip 1] twice, insert tip of left-hand needle from left to right through the fronts of both slipped sts and work 2 tog; st(s) stitch(es); st-st stocking stitch; tbl through back loop; tog together; yf yarn forward; yrn yarn round needle.

BACK

** With 3.25mm needles, cast on 104(110:116:122:128:134:140) sts. K 22 rows. Change to 4mm needles and work in patt as follows: 1st row (RS) K2, k2tog, [yf, k3, yf, sl 1, k2tog, psso] to last 4 sts, yf, k4. 2nd row P3, p2tog, yrn, [p1, yrn, p2tog, p1, p2tog, yrn] to last 3 sts, p3.

3rd row K3, [k1, yf, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yf, k2] to last 5 sts, k1, yf, k2tog, k2. 4th row P3, yrn, p2tog, [p1, p2tog, yrn, p1, yrn, p2tog] to last 3 sts, p3. 5th to 16th rows Rep 1 to 4 rows, 3 times more. 17th row [K1, p1] to end. 18th row [P1, k1] to end.

19th to 24th rows Rep 17th and 18th rows 3 times more. These 24 rows form the patt and are repeated **. Cont in patt until 130(134:138:142:144:148:148) patt rows have been worked, so ending with a WS row. Cast off 28(30:32:34: 37:39:42) sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Leave rem 48(50:52:54:54:56:56) sts on a holder.

FRONT

Note: If there are insufficie­nt sts to work a full lace patt when working the neck decs, work these sts in st-st. Work as given for Back from ** to **. Cont in patt until 82(84:86:88: 90:92:92) rows have been worked, ending with a WS row.

Shape neck Next row (RS) Patt 52(55:58:61:64:67:70) sts, turn and work on these sts only, leave rem sts on a holder. Next row P1, p2tog, patt to end.

Next row Patt to end. Keeping patt correct (see Note) cont to dec one st at neck edge in this way on every foll WS row until 28(30:32:34:37:39:42) sts rem, ending with a dec row. Cast off. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to sts on holder, patt to end. Next row (WS) Patt to last 3 sts, p2tog tbl, p1. Next row Patt to end. Cont to dec one st at neck edge in this way on every foll WS row until 28(30:32:34: 37:39:42) sts rem, ending with a dec row. Cast off.

SLEEVES

Note: When working the lace patt

(1st to 4th patt rows), work inc sts in st-st until there are enough sts to add another patt repeat. The 7th size starts with 2 extra sts at each end which are worked in st-st until inc sts are taken into lace patt.

** With 3.25mm needles, cast on 44(44: 50:50:56:56:60) sts. K 22 rows. Change to 4mm needles and work in patt as given for Back, shaping as follows:

1st, 2nd and 3rd sizes only

Inc row (RS) Kfb, patt to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Patt 3 rows. Rep the last 4 rows until there are 88(90:96) sts.

4th, 5th, 6th and 7th sizes only Inc row (RS) Kfb, patt to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Patt 1 row. Inc row (RS) Kfb, patt to last 2 sts, kfb, k1. Patt 3 rows. Rep the last 6 rows until there are (102:110:114:118) sts.

All sizes

Cont straight in patt until sleeve measures 37(38:38:39:39:40:40)cm, ending with a WS row. Cast off all sts.

NECKBAND

Join left shoulder seam. With RS facing and 3.25mm needles, k across 48(50:52:54:54:56:56) sts on back neck holder, pick up and k48(50:50:51:52: 53:54) sts down the left front neck, place marker, pick up and k1 at centre front, then 48(50:50:51:52:53:54) sts up right front neck. 145(151:153:157:159:163:165) sts. Slipping marker on every row, work as follows: 1st row (WS) K to end. 2nd row K to 2 sts before the marker, ssk, k1, k2tog, k to end. Rep the last 2 rows 3 times more. Cast off all sts knitwise.

TO MAKE UP

Join right shoulder and neckband seam. Place markers 24(25:25:28:30:31:32)cm down from the shoulder seams on side edges. With centre of cast off edge of sleeve to shoulder, sew on sleeves between markers. Join side and sleeve seams.
