Nadiya’s ingredients for a perfect summer

HOLIDAY MOMENTS WITH THE FAMILY

We love going off the beaten track. We’ll head to Portugal or Turkey and rent a cottage. I always take my knives with me, so I can cook. As long as there’s sea nearby, a market to buy fruit, veg and fish, and a kitchen to cook in, we’re fine. My kids love going to the beach – even if it’s freezing! It’s lucky because my husband is from the North, so we tend to go to Scarborough. If we’re going south, we’ll go to Bournemouth. There’s nothing so lovely as being all wrapped up on a cold British beach, eating fish and chips – it’s the best feeling! Every year, we take one holiday abroad for the sunshine. Last year, we went to Disneyland, which the kids loved. But after 10 days, I was ready to come home!

HAVING A SUMMER BOOK ON THE GO

I’m currently reading Me After

You by Jojo Moyes. I also love autobiographies, so next on the list is Where Am I Now? by child star Mara Wilson. The problem with writing books is that it doesn’t leave much time for reading them. I have a pile of books by my bed and I’ll only manage a page before I fall asleep! Growing up, To Kill A Mocking Bird made a huge impression on me, after reading it for my GCSES. Being someone who was free, I’d never had any idea that there were people in the world who weren’t. So that book had a big impact on me and led me to read books by Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.
