It’s time to GO GREEN!
Want to live a more eco-friendly life? Our homes guru Sarah shows you the way
WATER WISELY
Every year, August comes up and bites me. I think I’ve planned carefully to enjoy high summer
(in my head at least!) but, in reality, by the time it arrives, things are drying out and need more help staying alive. Being mindful of using water efficiently, I’ve fitted a Gardena Micro-drip-system (from £55, garden centres), which is excellent – it gives your plants just the right amount of water, even when you’re away from home. It’s great for small spaces, and you can add to it whenever you choose. I’d also suggest you get a water butt (Amazon has loads) fitted to the bottom of your down pipe – most come with a tap on the bottom, so it’s easy to get the water out. Rainwater is not only friendlier to the environment than piped water, it’s also better for your plants.
BRING ON THE BUTTERFLIES
The best way of running a garden is to make it work for your needs and then let nature use the space around it. And if you’re happy with a more wild environment, you’ll find that wildlife will happily share it with you. Part of your lawn can grow wild for ground-nesting bees, or you can allow a dead tree to stand to create nooks for butterflies to visit. Plantwise, both lavender and liatris are easy-to-grow attractions for bees and butterflies. However, you also need to think about what wildlife you want to entice – for the animal’s own good. If, for example, you’re looking to attract hedgehogs, then create comfortable places where they can sleep. But be aware: it’s also tricky to keep predators at bay.
