HOW YOU CAN HELP YOURSELF

-

AVOID SMOKING

as it increases the risk of developing thyroid disease.

NUTRITIONISTS USUALLY RECOMMEND FOLLOWING A DIET FREE FROM SUGAR

and refined foods to improve thyroid function. Selenium helps to regulate the production of thyroid hormones and protects the thyroid gland from the chemical reactions involved. In parts of the world where soil levels of both selenium and iodine are low (including the UK) the risk of developing an underactive thyroid gland is high. Eat more selenium-rich foods (eg: Brazil nuts, wheatgerm, fish, wholegrain cereals, mushrooms, onions, garlic). If you do have hypothyroidism, eat sources of iodine such as in fish, seafood, eggs, meat and milk.

SOME FOODS CONTAIN SUBSTANCES CALLED GOITROGENS

which can interfere with thyroid function.

These foods include Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. If you have hypothyroidism, avoid eating excessive amounts.

IF YOU HAVE HYPERTHYROIDISM,

avoid iodised salt and stimulants

such as coffee and tea, which speed up the metabolism.

COULD IT BE CANCER?

If you notice a lump in your neck, see your doctor right away. Picked up early, thyroid cancer can be successfully treated.
