MATERIALS

8(9:10) 50g balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in Stone 27. Pair of 5mm knitting needles.

TENSION

18 sts and 34 rows to 10cm square over double garter st (rested and unstretche­d – see Note) using 5mm needles.

NOTE

Leave the knitting to rest before measuring so that the single and double garter stitch close up.

BACK

With 5mm needles, cast on 84(93:102) sts. 1st row (WS) K to end. 2nd row K to end. 3rd row

K25(28:31), p to end. 4th row

P59(65:71), k to end. These 4 rows form the double moss st with single moss st and are repeated. Work in patt until back measures 35(37:39)cm from cast on edge, ending with a 3rd row.

Shape armholes

Cast off 12(13:14) sts knitwise at beg of next 2 rows. 60(67:74) sts. Next row (RS) K to end.

Next row K13(15:17), p to end. Next row P47(52:57), k to end. Next row K to end. The last 4 rows re-set the patt with fewer sts at each side after the armhole shaping and are repeated until back measures 51(55:59)cm, ending with a 1st row.

Shape back neck

Next row (RS) Patt 20(22:24), turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Cast off 3 sts at beg (neck edge) of next row, and 2 sts at beg of foll 2 WS rows. 13(15:17) sts. Patt 1 row. Cast off rem sts for right shoulder. With RS facing, slip 20(23:26) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn to rem 20(22:24) sts, cast off 3 sts, patt to end. Patt 1 row. Cast off 2 sts at beg (neck edge) of next row and foll RS row. 13(15:17) sts. Patt 2 rows. Cast off rem sts for left shoulder.

FRONT

With 5mm needles, cast on 84(93:102) sts. 1st row (WS) K to end. 2nd row

K to end. 3rd row P59(65:71), k to end.

4th row K25(28:31), p to end. These 4 rows form double moss st with single moss st and are repeated. Work in patt until front measures 35(37:39)cm from cast on edge, ending with a 3rd row.

K13(15:17), p to end. Next row K to end. The last 4 rows re-set the patt with fewer sts at each side after the armhole shaping and are repeated until 8 rows fewer have been worked than on Back to start of back neck shaping, so ending with a 1st row.

Shape front neck

Next row (RS) Patt 22(24:26), turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Cast off 3 sts, at beg (neck edge) of next row, 2 sts at beg of foll 2 WS rows and 1 st at beg of next 2 WS rows. 13(15:17) sts. Patt 5 rows. Cast off rem sts for right shoulder. With RS facing, slip 16(19:22) sts on to a holder, rejoin yarn to rem 22(24:26) sts, cast off 3 sts, patt to end. Patt 1 row. Cast off 2 sts at beg (neck edge) of next row and foll RS row, then

1 st at beg of foll 2 RS rows. 13(15:17) sts. Patt 6 rows. Cast off rem sts for left shoulder.

NECK EDGING

Join right shoulder seam. With 5mm needles, pick up and k15 sts down left front neck edge, k across 16(19:22) sts at centre front, pick up and k16 sts up right front neck edge, 10 sts down right back neck edge, k across 20(23:26) sts at centre back then pick up and k11 sts up left back neck. 88(94:100) sts. K 4 rows. Cast off knitwise.

TO MAKE UP Join left shoulder and neckband seam. Join side seams, carefully matching patts.
