Shorelines (and riverbanks) are awash with historic cities and ancient sites, a legacy of the days before airports and superhighways challenged transporting goods by sea. Many of the Med’s historic cities – Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Genoa, Naples and Venice, for example – are on the water. You may not be able to scoop them all up on one cruise, but if you divide the Med into the east and west, with Italy as the partition, it makes the choice of where to sail easier.
