Tin­sel was de­signed to repli­cate icicles, and was ini­tially made from strips of real sil­ver! How­ever, this be­came tar­nished by smoke from candles, so lead foil was used in­stead. In the 1960s, wor­ries about lead poi­son­ing saw a switch to plas­tic ma­te­ri­als, which are still used to­day.
